KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 12): Axiata Group Bhd has appointed Khazanah Nasional Bhd deputy managing director Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin Raja Abdul Aziz as non-independent non-executive director of the group, effective today.

He replaces Kenneth Shen, who served on the board as Khazanah nominee, since 2011.

“We are pleased to welcome Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil as the newest member of the board. His deep experience across various industries, in particular in technology and innovation, will bring new and relevant perspectives to the board.

“At the same time, the board would like to thank Kenneth for his invaluable contributions to the Axiata board over the last six years and we are also very pleased that Kenneth will remain in the Axiata group as a board member of edotco Group Sdn Bhd and PT XL Axiata Tbk,” said Axiata chairman Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar in a statement.

Azmil joined Khazanah in 2011 as executive director of investments, managing investments in areas including innovation and technology as well as oversight for the fund’s offices in San Francisco and Khazanah Koridor Utara in Penang.

Prior to that, he was the managing director and chief executive officer of Malaysia Airlines, after serving as the airline’s executive director and chief financial officer in 2005, and was a non-executive director of the airline in 2004.

He was also with PricewaterhouseCoopers in their London and Hong Kong offices, in the Audit and Business Advisory Services division, specialising in financial services.

“As we undergo a period of transformation in the telecoms industry, we welcome Tengku Dato’ Sri Azmil who brings with him a breadth of knowledge from competitive industries that have seen similar revolutionary changes,” said Axiata president and group chief executive officer Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim.
