KUALA LUMPUR (April 13): Hong Leong IB Research (HLIB) has maintained its "neutral" rating on the automotive sector with its top picks comprising Pecca Group Bhd and DB-Hicom Bhd.

In a note today, the research house said the sector is expected to be supported by a rebound in total industry volume growth in 2018, with improvement in consumer sentiment and normalising impact from tightened bank guideline.

It said while stronger ringgit will improve the industry margins, the higher basic material costs may partially offset the benefits of ringgit appreciation.

HLIB said the review for the National Automotive Policy (NAP) is expected to be announced by mid-2018.

It added that the Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry are deliberating to augment the policy.

Reviewing a meeting it hosted with MAI, the research house said MAI mentioned that NAP 2018 is an enhancement from the existing NAP 2014 with four 4 new pillars — next-generation vehicles, mobility, industrial revolution 4.0 and artificial intelligence.

"We believe NAP 2018 will improve automated manufacturing thus contributing to the growth in Malaysia automotive industry," it said.
