After our analysis of the compensation paid to the board of directors (BODs) of Bursa Malaysia-listed companies relative to the companies' financial performance, this week, we zero in on CEO compensation for 2017. The median remuneration of all CEOs was RM0.95 million a year while the average was RM2.28 million a year.

For non-GLCs with the highest CEO compensation package, the median was RM10.42 million while the average was RM21.3 million. For 42 GLCs, the median remuneration was RM1.8 million and the average was RM3.8 million. This shows that the GLCs' CEO compensation was generally lower than that of the biggest non-GLC companies.

The highest-paid CEOs were Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay of Genting Bhd (RM168 million) and Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin of Sapura Energy Bhd (RM71.9 million). Their pay was substantially higher than everyone else. The next group of highly paid CEOs included Dr Tan See Leng of IHH Healthcare Bhd (RM33.9 million).
