KUALA LUMPUR (April 2): The Anti-Fake News Bill 2018 has passed the second reading at the Dewan Rakyat.

A total of 123 MPs from Barisan Nasional and PAS supported the Bill while 64 Pakatan Harapan MPs voted against it.

The block vote took place after 50 MPs debated the Bill at the policy stage.

The Bill has now proceeded to the committee stage, where it is being debated again. A final vote on the Bill is expected to take place later today.

Earlier today, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said told the house that the proposed law is not aimed at limiting the freedom of speech.

“As stated in the explanatory statement of the Bill, this law is not intended to restrict the freedom of speech but to restrict the dissemination of fake news,” she said.
