(July 7): Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) director-general Datuk Mhd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz and Home Ministry deputy secretary-general (management) Datuk Hashim Ismail have been appointed the new mayor of KL and president of Putrajaya Corporation respectively.

Amin's appointment is effective July 18 while Hashim's will assume his new post on August 1, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said in a statement today.

Amin takes over from Tan Sri Ahmad Phesal Talib who was given a one-year extension until July 17 after his term came to an end on July 15 last year.

Tengku Adnan said that Amin had done a good job as DBKL director-general and had shown high commitment and integrity.

“His leadership has been well accepted by DBKL staff and the majority of the people in Kuala Lumpur. He joined DBKL in 1978 and his 37 years of experience will help him to carry out his duties as mayor.

“Given his outstanding record of service, he will be able to take Kuala Lumpur to greater heights with the goals and vision to make Kuala Lumpur a 'World Class City' by 2020,” Tengku Adnan said.

Phesal also congratulated Amin on his appointment and hoped that the latter would continue to make Kuala Lumpur a vibrant and active city.

“He is a good leader and we hope he continues to put Kuala Lumpur on the world map,” Phesal told The Malaysian Insider.

Phesal also advised Amin to work together with all levels of society and ensure that there was good governance in the administration.

He also expressed his heartfelt appreciation to all those who had supported him during his tenure as mayor.

When asked about his retirement plans, Phesal said that he would continue to serve the interest of the people.

“First, I’m going to take a long, deserving break. Then I will come back and get involved in social activities and community work that is in the interest of the public,” he said.

Tengku Adnan also expressed his appreciation to Phesal for his services during his three-year tenure as mayor from 2012 to 2015.

“He has achieved and implemented various effective and excellent policies at DBKL during his tenure,” he said.

Amin who hails from Negri Sembilan, was born on August 1, 1955. He has a Master’s degree in Economics from the Universiti Malaya in 1978.

He then continued his studies at the Birmingham University, United Kingdom, in 1986 and graduated with a diploma in Urban Development.

Amin has vast experience in administration, planning, management and development of local government.

Meanwhile, Tengku Adnan said Hashim, 58, will replace Tan Sri Dr Aseh Che Mat whose contract expires on July 31.

Tengku Adnan hopes that Hasim will continue Aseh's legacy in making Putrajaya more than a federal administrative centre.

“We hope he continues the excellent work and make Putrajaya into a world-class destination for various events,” he said.

Tengku Adnan also expressed his deepest appreciation and gratitude to Aseh who has transformed Putrajaya into a smart and green city known not only locally but also internationally.

Hashim has ample experience in security affairs, administration and management of local government during his 32 years in the government sector.

He currently holds the post of Home Ministry deputy secretary-general (management). Hashim had previously held the position of Federal Territories Ministry deputy secretary-general (management).

He was also involved in various development programmes in Putrajaya.

Hashim, who hails from Malacca, has a Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) degree from Universiti Malaya in 1981.

He also obtained a Diploma in Public Management from the Institute of Public Administration (Intan) in 1982. – The Malaysian Insider
