KUALA LUMPUR (July 3): Newly-appointed Attorney-General (AG) Tommy Thomas is expected to lead the prosecution team when former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is charged in court tomorrow.

Najib will face several charges relating to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB)'s former subsidiary SRC International Sdn Bhd.

A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer said Najib's arrest signifies the completion of the investigation by MACC.

"It was the only remaining part of the investigation (following the submission of the) papers (to Thomas on June 13). So tomorrow the charge would be completed," the officer told theedgemarkets.com.

Bernama reported that the charge would be read before Sessions Court judge Datuk Zainal Abidin Kamarudin before being transferred to the Criminal High Court 1 where Judge Datuk Azman Abdullah presides.

The 1MDB Special Investigation Taskforce, set up by the Council of Eminent Persons, confirmed that Najib, 65, who was picked up from his house at Jalan Langgak Duta at 2.35pm, would be charged for his alleged involvement in SRC International where RM45 million was found in his personal account.

Najib has maintained his innocence in the 1MDB scandal that has allegedly amassed US$4.5 billion, money that was siphoned through a series of bank transactions and used to purchase assets overseas including luxury yacht, paintings and properties.

The charge against Najib makes Thomas' inaugural case as AG after being appointed to the post on June 5. He replaces Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali, who cleared Najib of any wrongdoing in 2016 over the receipt of billions in his account.

Thomas was previously quoted as saying that there would be no cover-ups in the RM42 billion debt-laden sovereign fund.
