KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 38 Malaysians have been awarded scholarships by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Culture, which awarded the Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment Scholarships.

These Malaysians will pursue their academic degrees and short-term Mandarin courses in Taiwan from September this year.

Among the MOE scholarship recipients, 16 will be reading for their bachelor degrees, 17 for their master’s degree, while two will be reading for their doctoral degrees.

The scholarship recipients received their award certificates from His Excellency Ambassador James Chang Chi-Ping, the head of mission at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia during a presentation and briefing session held last Friday in Kuala Lumpur.

Chang congratulated the scholarship recipients and said he hoped that they would contribute to strengthening future bilateral academic collaboration and cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Malaysia.

“We are glad to know that not only Chinese students applied for our scholarships, [but] the number of Malay applicants who want to undertake academic degrees in Taiwan has been increasing as well in these last few years. The English-taught programmes offered by universities in Taiwan have become one of the popular options for non-Chinese students.”

Every MOE scholarship recipient is awarded tuition and miscellaneous expenses of about NTD 640,000 (RM91,400) to NTD 1,280,000 (RM182,800).

The three Huayu Enrichment Scholarship recipients will be receiving a monthly stipend of NTD 25,000.

Chang pointed out that this year was Taiwan’s New Southward Policy action year and one of the main pillars of its policy was an increase to 35 scholarship students from Malaysia being awarded Taiwan scholarships this year. Twenty scholarships were awarded in 2016.
