KUALA LUMPUR (March 10): The Auditor-General's audit on controversial investment fund, 1 Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), has "just started", said the country's Auditor-General, Tan Sri Setia Haji Ambrin bin Buang.

However, the precise terms of reference for the audit is still unclear. Ambrin said his mandate was "broad" and based on the statement made by Prime Minister Datuk Sri Najib Razak earlier.

Ambrin said he had met 1MDB CEO Arul Kanda Kandasamy but declined to disclose who else he would meet for the investigations, or the timeline to produce the report for the Public Accounts Committee.

When pressed for details and plan of audit, he said: "You are probing too much. Let us do our work."

He said the National Audit Department would do all that was necessary to conduct the audit "freely and professionally".

He also did not rule out the possibility of engaging external third parties to assist in the audit process.
