KUALA LUMPUR (July 30): The government has issued 184 individual Network Services Provider licences to-date, including to Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM), the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Communication and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said Putrajaya has also issued 220 individual Network Facilities Provider licences.

These licences permit holders to build the communication infrastructures required to offer broadband services nationwide.

"The government has been encouraging industry competition in broadband telecommunication service offerings in Malaysia in accordance with the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998," Gobind said.

He was replying to a question by Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (PH-Ledang) on whether TM was still controlling 90% of the High Speed Broadband (HSBB) network and 'last mile access' in the country, and whether the government would allow more telcos to enter the broadband internet market and have their own HSBB and 'last mile access'.

Gobind said although TM owns the country's HSBB infrastructure, any party can gain access to the infrastructure by signing a commercial agreement with TM.
