KUALA LUMPUR (May 21): The 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP) will see the construction of new power plants in Malaysia, with a total investment cost of RM28 billion and combined capacity of 7,626MW.

According to Prime Minister Najib Razak, these projects will include three new coal-fired power plants in Johor, Perak and Negeri Sembilan, and two gas-fired power plants in Pulau Pinang and Johor.

“These projects have an estimated investment cost of RM28 billion, and will generate 35,000 new jobs,” said Najib in his speech at the Dewan Rakyat today.

Meanwhile, on the Langat 2 water treatment plant, the Prime Minister has urged the expedition of the project, in order to meet reserve margins of between 10% and 15%, as outlined by Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SPAN).

He noted that reserve margins for Selangor and Kuala Lumpur currently stands at approximately 4%.

“The delay in the execution of the project will affect the integrity of the water supply and impact the lives of the people of Selangor and the Klang Valley,” he said.

For the oil and gas segment, the development of the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC) will continue, with a projected total investment of RM53 billion in 2016.

Najib also outlined other key infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Mukah Lawas airport in Sarawak, the expansion of the Kota Bharu airport, the refurbishment of Kuantan Port and the upgrading of the Padang Besar Terminal.
